LeBron James breaks the NBA scoring record
For nearly 39 years, Kareem Abdul-Jabaar has held one of the most iconic and impossible records in sports history. No one would’ve thought that the NBA scoring record would be broken for such a long time. It wasn’t until a man named LeBron James entered the league.
The Lakers played the Oklahoma City Thunder on February 7th, and LeBron James needed 36 points to break Kareem’s record. The night began, and the crowd went crazy every time LeBron James had the ball in his hands and scored. It wasn’t until James needed two more points to break the record late in the third quarter. That is when we saw a classic James moment.
He receives the ball and delivers his patented fadeaway jumper, which goes in the basket and breaks the record. The crowd went berserk, and Bronny and Bryce James stepped onto the court and embraced their father.
James becomes overwhelmed and embraces every second of the moment as he runs around the court and lifts his hands above his head. There is a brief ceremony on the court as James’ family joins him as well as Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and many more to celebrate the impossible.
"I just want to say thank you to the Laker faithful. You guys are one of a kind, […] I thank you guys so much for allowing me to be a part of something I've always dreamed about […] I would never ever in a million years have dreamt this better than what it is tonight. F---, man. thank you guys.”
The game continues, and the Lakers are down 104-99, and the team just falls apart as the game goes on. Anthony Davis was not himself, Russell Westbrook was making questionable passes and head coach Darvin Ham had small lineups that did not help against this Thunder team.
The Lakers were unable to win and thus failed to capitalize on a historic moment. But LeBron James achieved the impossible and will continue to add in the long run.
